LECTURE

Introduction to Photoshop 3

On the fourth meeting of lecture which is held online on 14 October 2024, Mr. Fauzi introduced us about adjustment layers and filters.

Adjustment Layer
A group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to the image without permanently changing its pixels.

With this tool, you can edit and discard the adjustments or restore the original image at any time.

Figure 1.1: Adjustment Layer

When adding an adjustment layer to the image, a new layer will appear over your image and a Properties panel specific to the type of adjustment that have bee n selected will pop up. The Properties panel will show an option to modify the adjustment layer.

2. Level
Levels modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtowns, and highlights.

3. Curves
Allow to adjust as many point as we want throughout the entire tonal range of the image.

4. Exposure
have 3 sliders to adjust the levels: exposure, offset, gamma

5. Selective Color
Selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in the image.

PRACTICAL

From all the three options, Mr. Fauzi chose composition #3.

Composition #3

In this design, I used the textured grunge as the background because I love the texture. Then I arranged the two buildings, placed them opposite from each other and rotated them using the rotate tool. Then I placed texture_2 in the bottom right corner. At the center, I positioned the fish as the focal point and added a layer mask behind it.

Then Mr. Fauzi told us to use adjustment layers and filters for the chosen collage. First, I converted the orange texture grunge background to black and white to make the blue colour pop.

Then, I applied curves to adjust the tonal and color values.

I also adjust the brightness/ contrast to enhance the difference between the lightest and the darkest areas of the image.

I also slightly increased the exposure to make the brights brighter and the darks darker.

Here is the final outcome:

FEEDBACK

General Feedback
Mr. Fauzi told us to give adjustment layers and filters to the chosen composition.

Specific Feedback
I thought that in this task we were allowed to use black and white filters, which I did for compositions #2 and #3, but it turns out this was for the next task. So I deleted all the filters and submitted the original version instead.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
I'm happy that I learned a lot about new Photoshop tools. Making a collage is quite challenging for me because coming up with new ideas has never been easy, but I'm grateful that I managed to finish it.

Observations
I noticed that color scheme and balancing composition plays a significant role in creating a collage.

Findings
I found myself have a better understanding of Photoshop through this task, I explored various type of tools and features.
