INTRO TO AFTER EFFECTS
What is After Effects?
Animation software for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing. This software allows to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.
Transforming still images into moving images
First, in Adobe Photoshop (which is a platform to compositing the layers), all the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organize and easy to be animated in After Effects. Then, go to Adobe After Effects and import elements such as images, video, vector, and more. All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as Photoshop and Illustrator. After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.
TUTORIAL
PRACTICAL
Here are the steps I followed for this exercise:
1) Download the W10_ANIMATE.psd file from the Google Drive link provided.
2) Import the W10_ANIMATE.psd file into Adobe After Effects.
3) Open After Effects and create the following folders:
- 01_COMP
- 02_PSD
- 03_AI
- 04_MOV
- 05_AUDIO
4) Add the downloaded W10_ANIMATE.psd file to the 02_PSD folder. While importing, I selected:
- Import As: Composition - Retain Layer Sizes
- Layer Options: Editable Layer Styles
5) After importing, there will be two files appeared:
- W10_ANIMATE
- W10_ANIMATE Layers
I moved the W10_ANIMATE file into the 01_COMP folder.
6) Open the W10_ANIMATE file
7) Change the compositions settings by going to Composition > Composition Settings and changed:
- Duration to 15 seconds
- Frame rate to 25 frames per second
8) Activate the Keys column by right-clicking the timeline header and selecting Column > Keys
9) Select the 'circle copy' layer and enabled the 'solo' button
10) Expand the Transform properties of the 'circle copy' layer and changed:
- Rotation to 45°
- Scale to 90%
11) For the 'fish' layer, change the 'position' to move up and down repeatedly.

REFLECTIONS
Experience
I enjoyed practicing basic animation properties like rotation, scale, and position. This exercise showed me the advantage of being organized, as it makes the process more efficient, especially as the project gets more complex.
Observations
I noticed organizing files into specific folders helped me work more efficiently. I also saw that making small changes, like adjusting rotation and scale, had a big impact on the animation.
Findings
I used to think that using Adobe After Effects was complex, but once I learned how to use it, everything became fun and actually not as hard as I expected. I find that the only way to master it is by practicing regularly.
