Poster Design
A design doesn't have to strictly follow these rules to vibe "good.". Some absolutely mind-blowing designs ignore one or more of the principles of design in order to create an eye-catching and effective work.

The 7 principles of poster design:
  • Emphasis:
    • About what sticks out, what draws the audience in and holds their attention.
    • Controlling emphasis means controlling hierarchy.
  • Balance and alignment
    • How you space and place the different elements in your design so they develop a structure and feel organized and connected. (different elements have different weights)
  • Contrast
    • The technique of juxtaposing the elements in your design to make them stand out.
  • Repetition
    • Being consistent with your color palette and brand voice across multiple designs is another form of repetition that a designer must consider.
  • Proportion
  • Movement
  • White space

TUTORIAL

PRACTICAL

PART 1: RECOLORING (THE BREAKDOWN)

In this assignment, we were instructed to recolor the Norman Lindsay black and white image given into color photo using brush tool in Adobe Photoshop.

Here is the black & white picture given:

Figure 1.1: B&W Image Provided

The Steps

1) I downloaded the image that was uploaded in Google Drive.
2) I created a new layer in panel layer and renamed it.
3) I used the brush tool to color the selected area, adjusting the size and hardness based on needs (I chose the color based on the area I want to color). To refine the edges, I used the eraser tool.
4) I applied blending mode, either overlay or soft light and also modified the opacity.
5) If necessary, I adjusted the hue and saturation by going to Image > Adjustment > Hue/Saturation.

I repeated these steps several times for each layer, creating a total of eight layers for the shirt, brows, hair, lips, eyes, contour, face, and background.

Shortcut keys I learned:
  • Increase Brush Size: ]
  • Decrease Brush Size: [
  • Adjust Brush Hardness: Control + Option + Click and drag mouse upwards to soften/ downwards to increase the hardness

PART 2: RECOLORING (THE BREAKDOWN) - ADVANCED LEVEL

For this part, we need to recolor a black and white image using Layer Mask and apply the hair and skin colors from the provided images.

The Steps

1) I covered the areas that has the same color tone using the brush tool, adjusting the size and hardness as needed.
2) Then, I selected the area and applied layer mask. To refine the edges, I right-clicked on the layer mask and chose "Select and Mask", then used the three tools (Quick Selection Tool, Refine Edge Brush Tool, and Brush Tool) alternately based on needs in smaller size brush (by resizing the brush size).
3) After that, I created a new layer and renamed it.
4) Then, I added a solid color and chose the color using eyedropper tool to select a color from provided images.
5) Next, I replaced the selected area to that layer.
6) At last, I changed the blending mode for each layer according to specific needs and modified the opacity to ensure the colors blended seamlessly.

I repeated these steps several times for each layer, creating a total of seven layers for the skin, hair, teeth, lips, wardrobe, earrings and background.

For the third one, we were given these images as the options and I chose the photograph of Lisa Manoban. Then, we were instructed to search photo online for skin/hair references. I applied the same steps using the Layer Mask technique.

REFLECTIONS
Experience
I had a great time exploring new various tools in Photoshop. Experimenting the tools has enhanced my creativity and now I have better understanding of digital editing.

Observations
I realized that using shortcut keys significantly efficiency my time, shortcuts allow quicker access during the editing process.

Findings
I found that the more I practice editing in in Photoshop, the better my understanding of the software is.
