INSTRUCTIONS

Write a 300 to 350-word visual analysis of the artwork you selected from the art gallery. Refer to Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide to write the visual analysis. Next, using your design principles knowledge, sketch 3 ideas on how the selected design can be improved. Describe each idea and support it with a rationale in about 30-50 words. You may include some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas. Insert the feedback from the lecturer.

LECTURE

VISUAL ANALYSIS

Visual Analysis
- a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles
- a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people red and critically interpret images

How does Visual Analysis Work?

Visual Analysis include three phases:

Phase 1: Observation
- means looking closely
- identify visual elements
- do not read beforehand about the design
- is about looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you notice

Phase 2: Analysis
- think about your observations
- the specific elements identified should then be combined to create design principles that effects on the viewer
- how are your eyes led through the work and why

Phase 3: Interpretation
- fused with facts about the design work
- the meaning of this design, the purpose for it to be created

- Visual Analysis -

Observation
This artwork is presented in a landscape format. The most attracting element as the main focus is the woman figure with cool-toned skin who is looking at the viewer with a serene expression. To the left of the woman figure, a rose is held in her hand, with a small part of the rose extending beyond the paper. Positioned behind the figure is a gold-colored astrolabe, which draws the viewer's attention by its inticrate details and vibrant colour. The background features a lively and vibrant orange wallpaper with repeating and textured patterns. Overall, the composition is rich in color, dominated by warm tones, with certain elements that really pop up.

Analysis
This design is asymmetrical balanced. The emphasis is on the figure of the woman, who creates a serene expression and idealized beauty in art. The braided hair of the woman creates movement, guiding the viewer's eye through the artwork. She is holding a rose, which establishes a sense of connection with the figure. Behind the woman, a gold-colored astrolabe also draws attention, with its circular pattern, adding rhythm that connects well with the curves of the figure and the rose. The background, featuring vibrant orange colour with repetitive patterns, create contrast, as it set against the cooler-toned woman figure. The background patterns and colour also support the figure without distracting. There is harmony and unity in the overall composition as the arrangement complement each other. The artwork shows proportion and a well-implemented hierarchy: the figure takes primary focus, followed by the slightly smaller elements. This artwork presents a harmonious blends and sense of elegance. The use of contrasting colors and fine details make it eye-catching.

Interpretation
This artwork was made by Vladimir London, an artist from Russia. Created in 2021, this artwork was exhibited at the International Watercolour Exhibition in Spain and is also featured in the printed exhibition catalog.

- 3 Ideas to Improve Selected Design -

Figure 1.2

  • I intended to add falling rose petals to convey a sense of movement based on what I have learned from one of the design principles.
  • I also added a rose ring and a hair accessory to emphasize the rose theme further and create repetition.
  • I changed the background into darker colour so that the woman's figure would stand out more.

Figure 1.3

  • Adding bronze frame (a more muted color compared to the gold astrolabe so it wouldn't steal the spotlight of the astrolabe).
  • Simplifying the wallpaper to colour only, avoid making the design too crowded.
  • Adding falling rose petals, leaves (movement).
  • Adding shadows for depth.
  • Adding symbols 'RoM' from 'The Rose of Moods'

Figure 1.3

  • Adding antique patterned bronze-colored frame. The concept is the figure rises from the frame which is inspired by 3D billboard.
  • Simplifying the wallpaper to colour only, avoid making the design too crowded.
  • Adding falling rose petals (movement).
  • Adding symbols 'RoM' from 'The Rose of Moods'

FEEDBACK

WEEK 3: Mr. Fauzi stated that it was a good progress. After looking at my second idea about adding the frame, he suggested me to think of coming up with a digital billboard ideas.

WEEK 4: Mr. Fauzi told me to only use the elements already present in the artwork, like duplicating.

REFLECTION

I really enjoy this task as it encouraged me to think outside the box and think more of an artwork in a creative way. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be taught and to experiment with ways to enhance this artwork by directly applying design principles we've learned.
