FINAL PROJECT

Chosen Tarot Card: Death
We decided the theme of a turning point, where the character's problems reach a breaking point, symbolizing the Death card as the end of her struggles and the start of a new beginning.

Presentation Slides
Our presentation slides include the following sections: the VFX tutorial we used, the theme and synopsis, references, story breakdown, shot list, storyboard, behind-the-scenes content, and links to both the Google Drive folder and the YouTube video.

Working Process

For this project, we used both Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects. First, we imported all the necessary footage. Then, we edited the character transition inside the hand using Adobe After Effects.

The clip shows the character with their eyes closed, as if they are deep in thought. In the original footage, the character moves backward while the camera pulls away. To create the illusion that the audience is entering the character’s mind, we reversed the clip using the 'Time-Reverse Layer' feature in After Effects.

After that, we edited the transition using the Roto Brush effect and added radial blur effect. We also added smoke footage to enhance the transition that we created.

Next, we inserted the footage of the hand, where we also used the Roto Brush to follow the movement of the hand. After positioning the hand, we placed the character on top of it to make them appear scared. We also added text using a creepy font and applied a falling effect to give the impression that the character is being crushed by those problems. The same effect was used for all the texts, we only changed the position of the text.

Figure 1.6: Combining footage

For visual editing, we did color grading in After Effects, specifically adding a black and white effect to transform the hand from a normal skin tone into a more eerie, black-and-white version.

We also changed the color of the person inside the hand to match the mood and show the idea of change and a new beginning. We did this by adjusting the contrast, brightness, and other settings in Adobe After Effects.

We also add color grading for the background.

We also added a shadow of the subject inside the hand and applied color grading to the shadow to match the overall tone of the scene.

For the "death" meaning that pops up on the screen, we created the effect in Adobe After Effects by adjusting the scale, adding rotation, and applying an outer glow to make it stand out.

In Adobe Premiere Pro, we compiled all the footage and added the audio and sound effects.

For the audio, we added a voice clip of Sacha saying "incompetent," "useless," and "desperate," synchronized with the falling text on screen. Then, we applied an echo effect in Adobe Audition, using similar settings to what we learned earlier in class.

Here is the settings:

FEEDBACK

First Consultation (16 July)
My partner and I were still a bit confused about how to do the VFX editing. We tried following some YouTube tutorials, but they didn’t work out. So, we showed Mr. Martin the raw footage where we had already combined the clips. After we explained what we wanted to achieve, he suggested that we use the Roto Brush tool. We followed his advice and used it to edit the rest of the video.

Second Consultation (21 July)
During the second consultation, we presented the edited version of the video. Mr. Martin said it was okay overall, but he pointed out that some of the text was hard to read and appeared blurry. To address this, we zoomed in on the video and added a brief freeze-frame to give the audience enough time to read the text clearly. Mr. Martin also mentioned that some scenes could be removed, as they were unnecessary. This would make the video more straightforward and help convey the message more clearly. We also added a shadow to the subject inside the hand to make it look more realistic.

Third Consultation (23 July)
"Well done, you guys did a good job. One thing that could be improved is giving more time to the part where the text 'meaning of death' is highlighted."

REFLECTION

I had no prior experience using Adobe Premiere Pro, except for one task that Mr. Martin taught us, which is documented in the Exercise blog. It was quite challenging for me at first, but thankfully, Mr. Martin was very helpful in guiding us through the difficulties and providing valuable feedback. I'm also grateful for the great teamwork with Sacha, which helped me complete this task successfully.
